How it plays

How MUME plays

MUME is a text world laid over Tolkien's geography. You type commands to move, talk and fight, and the MMapper Web client draws a map as you go, which most text games lack. Levels need travel points, earned by visiting places nobody has been to lately.

Elves, Dwarves, Hobbits, Men and Half-Elves are at war with Orcs, Trolls and Black Númenóreans, and players on opposite sides are expected to fight. The rules are strict: dying or quitting carelessly can cost your gear, and lost experience is not refunded.

Your first half hour

  1. 0–5 min
    Open MMapper Web from the play page; it loads in the browser without installing anything. Create an account at the prompt.
  2. 5–15 min
    Make a character of one of the free peoples; you start in the Halls of Mandos. The help suggests praying to the Tower Hills to reach the beginner quests.
  3. 15–30 min
    Try the web tutorial, follow the map, and find an inn before you stop, so your gear is safe in rent.

Accounts and ages

There is no web sign-up form: the account is made at the game's prompt, and the rules allow one account per person. Bots and automation are banned.

MUME has no age rating and its rules contain no minimum age. Player killing between the two sides is part of the design, so younger or gentler players may find it harsh.
